Saving Smart

I love the older generations. There is something so sweet about seeing an elderly couple walking together, or an elder grocery shopping. I have such respect for these people in our society, and boy do I have questions for them.

I love hearing their tales of where they have come from, lessons they have learned and seeing that brilliant sparkle in their eyes. Something I have found in common between these folks is one tale in particular. It is the tale of, “How everything is so darned expensive nowadays”. Of course there is the tale of, “Kids these days…”, but there is nothing I can say or do about that one because I agree. Perhaps that is testament to my age?

Either way, my heart goes out to these folks who are struggling. I wish there was something I was able to do for them, but there is not. What I can do though is something for myself. I can change that old cliché around. History does NOT have to repeat itself. I sure would like to not have to worry about money when I am of the age that no longer permits me to work.

These vintage souls got me thinking and I began asking questions from people who are well qualified in discussing saving for your future. I opened up a Registered Retirement Savings Plan (RRSP) with my bank, and I also opened a Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA). On top of this, I opened up a vacation account.

Trust me, when I opened these accounts I thought that there was no way I would be able to set aside even a little bit of money, but it turned out I was wrong. I started putting away a measly $25/month in each account. I did not have to do anything with it as I set it all up on automatic withdrawal from my regular chequing account. It has become effortless for me to save. Because of the choices I have made in my youth, I won’t be part of the clan against change. I will evolve as well.

Or seek counsel with a qualified financial advisor at your local branch.

It’s just a suggestion. I think it’s great advice.
