What not to claim
I took a taxi to work last week and was trying to convince my taxi driver that I was going to win the lotto max that night. He thought I was insane! He kept asking me WHY I wanted to win so badly. This is where it was my turn to think HE was insane.
He had this belief that, if you win the lottery in Canada, you have to claim the amount as income and will therefore be charged taxes on this. He is incorrect. You do not have to claim your winnings…it is all yours!
Of course you will remember me should you win because I am taking the time out of my hectic life to explain this to you, but you do not have to pay any amount to the government whatsoever.
I was curious as to what else you do not have to claim so I checked out the CRA website, and discovered there was more that even I, my all-knowing self, did not know.
